I see people. People relaxing, reading, studying. People visiting with a friend or a group of friends or colleagues. They are comfortable. They feel safe. There is laughter. And smiles all around. It’s people that I see when I recall the days of The Hard Bean CafĂ© of Grandview, Missouri
The ‘Bean was a rare pearl in the center of a town struggling to re-identify. It was that third place, not home or work or school. It was that place where everyone knew your name and, best, cared about you.
My heart is now broken to see how one person was able to destroy in six weeks what took six years to build. When it was literally handed to him he was thankful to inherit a stable business that had weathered well many local and global economic storms, downtown construction, icy winters and sweltering summers. It didn’t make a lot of money but it was debt free, revenues were stable, and there was room to make it highly profitable. Best of all, it had an enormous loyal customer base. He said he planned to build on that, not scratch it all and start over. And that is why we, the owners of that great third place, did not even send out an email to our loyal customers and friends. The transition would be slow and all change would be for the greater good.
Yet when armed with authority, he decided nothing we, the proprietors and employees and customers, built was worth keeping and set out to change every aspect immediately. Worse than that, if it can be imagined, his business dealings were completely unethical and even illegal. Not only customers have been hurt but vendors and employees as well. Now he claims bankruptcy.
It took a long time to build trust and loyalty; loyalty that flowed equally between customer and proprietor and fantastic employees. That relationship ran deep. It was based on respect and, most of all, love for all. I pray that each person who was ever a part will remember fondly the love and respect, not the ruination. Let nothing taint the joy as we recall our Hard Bean community.

Oh my how sad for the patrons. What a greedy individual this person is. I am so sorry that this wonderful place for people to gather went under because someone was unethical in the dealings of this business. Although I personally never had the opportunity to visit The Hard Bean as I live in California, I did feel like part of the family. Enjoyed the utube postings of music, and just knowing of the events that Becca Cheryl and Ed planned made me feel like I was there.
Cheryl,I"M living in Pa, and you still captured the tragedy of this small business tragedy very clearly. It is a shame he was given enough rope to hang himself at the expense of others.
So sorry for all of you to be dealing with such a terrible person. What is now, is. Sadly often times we must clean up the mess of others. Your customers and friends know you and your light will shine through this darkness.
Love

The Hard Bean was a little slice of heaven on earth.! Will be more than missed. The business deal may have went sour but the memories of the hard beans greatness will forever be in our hearts. Family oriented business where families gathered and a family was created. My family and the girls at creative illusions miss you all dearly!
Love you!

I miss all of our friends and the fabulous times we had at the Hard Bean. Late nights laughing with old friends, sitting in the overstuffed chairs drinking Becca's awesome Lattes, Listening to Ed, Paul, Becca, and so many others make such amazing music from their hearts. And, of course, shooting pictures of it all. We love you all. WE will see you soon.
Sorry to hear this happened. How unfortunate. Places like this are always a gem.

Was at Julie'e barber shop getting a haircut today (i.e. Friday) and was talking to them about this very thing.
How one person could destroy something that was simple, yet meaningful for a lot of people (me included).
Well anyway, I took a walk down there and there was a "flurry" of activity. According to one of the workers, the place will re-opem next week. Just thought you would like to know.
