Joy will descend upon the heart that has not been deceived into believing that real giving is of tangible gifts alone because that is all people are grateful for. The deception of materialism makes one poor, regardless of his stand in life.
There are so many poor among us. Poor in mind, body and spirit. Those who are not are called to care for them.
We tend to think of caring for the poor, or perhaps anyone, as feeding and clothing them, and bringing them gifts, as at Christmas. If that is the definition of caring, what about the poor man? How does he care and how can he know joy?
A poor man can give his heart in prayer for those around him, or smile at a stranger. He can sit beside someone who is lonely, give a listening ear, or help carry another’s load.
Giving from the heart, tangible or not, can deliver pure joy to anyone, rich or poor.
