Earth Day - 40 Years!

Today is the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. Forty years ago, that was a meaningless event to me. Fortunately, I was already using nontoxic, biodegradable cleaners. But only because they worked, saved me money, and I heard they were better for my health.

Only about 10 to 15 years ago did it dawn on me – internally – just what all the toxins and chemicals in our homes, businesses, cars, gardens, etc were really doing to my family, to me and to this beautiful place we’ve been given to live in that we call earth. My first big eye opener was when I realized that all the scum layered over once pretty ponds and lakes and that was suffocating life in those waters was literally and directly from the use of cleaners with phosphates. That’s when I thought, “Oh my goodness. Now I understand.” And then I was grateful I am not a contributor to that ugly cover of death.

Today I am intentional in what I use to clean my house and even my body. I am more energy conscious. I have not moved too far along on the recycling wagon, but I am on it at some level.  Today I keep my eyes and mind open to ideas that will help preserve this beautiful planet. Gradually I am putting many of those to practice.

Today I understand that being green has a deeper spiritual significance. In being ‘green’ I can be a better steward of the gift of life from a loving Creator. Being green means to care for life in all its forms.

This year I intend to be more proactively green in my life. Because I am thankful for all creation and because I love life.

Happy 40th Earth Day to all!
