A Very Happy 13th Birthday!

Everyone was crazed about the new portable and small transistor radio.  My 13th  birthday was a few weeks away. I so wanted one. Mom and Dad never gave a hint that I would get one. And I really shouldn’t have expected one. Afterall, those new gadgets were pricey.

October 1st. No party. But a nice family birthday dinner which is what I prefer even to this day. We were waiting for Dad to get home from work. Excitement was building in me. My parents always made birthday surprises big.

Finally we heard him in the garage.  It seemed to take a few minutes longer for him to enter the dining room.

“Hi, Dad!” He gave me a big smile. He was holding his lunch bag with dirty meal utensils.

As I walked over to give him a hug I heard music. How odd. Where was it coming from? When I reached Daddy, the music was louder.

Eagerly I grabbed his lunch bag, “Oh, thank you!” I cried out with unbridled glee. They didn’t have to tell me what the bag held.

Mom and Dad laughed as he handed me the bag.

I opened it, took a peek, and reached inside to pick up a baby blue transistor radio playing one of my favorite stations. Holding it against me, happiness coursed through my body like electric current. Would the smile ever leave my face?

Note:
Now that I think of it, perhaps that was the beginning of my fascination with technology. Not that I went into that field; heavens, no.  But I do love reading all I can about the newest cell phones and computers.  And, yes, I do like having them.

Till this day, I can see my mother pulling me home, in the snow after buying a Yankee Clipper Sled at the local hardware store in Trenton. I was 3.

Its so funny that you're talking about this, my step mom was looking for a transistor radio over the holiday. She wanted to be able to listen to the high school ball games while at them. Of course, we found a new fandangled radio for her at Best Buy. LOL
